Yellow Dal / Lentil Curry

Yellow Dal / lentil curry is basically a side dish we can take along with Jeera rice/chapathi/Roti/ even normal rice. I tried this recipe with Mung dal. We can also use Tur Dal instead of Mung dal. It is simply a perfect menu for Lunch menu

Ingredients for yellow dal / Lentil curry:

Preparation Time: 10 mins | Cook Time: 20 mins | Serves: 2-3

  • Mung Dal – 1 cup (250 gms) – pressure cook beforehand
  • Onion – 1 finely chopped
  • Tomato -1 finely cjopped
  • bay leaf – 1, cinnamon stick, cloves -2
  • turmeric powder -1 pinch
  • chili powder -1 tsp
  • corainder powder -1 tsp
  • mustard seeds -1 tsp
  • cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • ginger garlic paste – 1 tbsp
  • dry methi leaves,coriander leaves
  • water as required
  • oil as required


  • in a vessel, add oil. Once hot, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let it splutter
  • bay leaf, cinnamon stick and cloves are added. slowly put ginger garlic paste and saute it well
  • add onions in the vessel and cook till turns translucent
  • tomatoes can be added. mix it well
  • once tomatoes are mushy, put in turmeric powder, chili powder, salt and coriander powder
  • add 1/2 cup of water. allow it to boil. add cooked mung dal when water boils
  • combine everything together and cook for 3-5 minutes
  • sprinkle dry methi leaves and coriander leaves. switch off flame
  • yellow dal curry is ready to serve!!!
  • serve hot with jeera rice ( recipe is here )
