Manathakkali Vathakozhambu

Manathakkali vathal vathakozhambu is a traditional south indian style vathakozhambu. It is very easy to prepare as lunch menu. It goes well with potato fry or sutta appalam. I got the recipe from my grandma who do wonders in cooking. She maintains her own style of preparing it. I normally prepares this recipe weekly once to have a traditional south indian lunch menu

Ingredients:

  • Tamarind _ 1 big gooseberry size ( soaked in 200 ml water)
  • Manathakkali vathal – 1/2 Cup
  • Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Methi Seeds – 1tsp
  • Tur Dal – 1/2 tsp
  • Red Chilli -1
  • Jaggery powder – 1 tsp
  • Sambar powder – 2 tbsp
  • Curry Leaves
  • Gingely Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Salt as required

Method:

  • Take a heavy bottomed vessel, add gingely oil. Once hot, add mustard seeds. Wait till it splutters
  • Add methi seeds, curry leaves, red chilli and tur dal. Saute it for a minute
  • Put manathakkali vathal now, along with Sambar powder and salt ( if manathakkali vathal is salted, reduce the salt as per taste)
  • Pour tamarind water, mix everything together and let it boil for another 15 minutes

  • Once the water lowers to half, turn off the flame. ( take a tbsp of rice flour, mix with water without any lumps, add it into our vathakozhambu. this is to thicken it in case if needed)
  • Jaggery powder is added before turning off the stove (this step is totally optional according to taste)
