Drumstick Lentil Gravy
Drumstick or murungakkai Poricha Kuzhambu is a traditional South Indian Menu Item served with Rice. This is one of the healthy recipes that can be cooked with the combination of Drumsticks and Mung Dal. It can be prepared in many ways. In the below recipe, I followed preparing Coconut rice flour paste, Cooking Mung Dal and Drumstick in pressure cooker and combining everything together
Ingredients to make Drumstick Poricha Kuzhambu:
- DrumStick – 2
- mung Dal – 1/4 cup
- Scrapped coconut – 1/4 cup
- rice flour – 2 tbsp
- Turmeric Powder – 1/8 tsp
- sambar powder – 1 tsp
- mustard seeds – 1 tsp
- urad dal – 1 tsp
- curry leaves
- cumin/Jeera Seeds -1 tsp
- Hing/Asoefotida (optional)
- Water as required
- Oil as required
- Salt as required
Method:
Step 1 – Cooking Mung Dal and Drumstick:
- In a small pressure cooker, add mung dal with a pinch of turmeric powder
- pour water to dissolve mung dal
- place a small cup on top, add cut drumsticks with 2 tbsp of water
- pressure cook for 3 whistles
- once pressure subsides, take out both cooked mung dal and drumsticks
- add some water with mung dal and mix it well
- keep both cooked drumstick and mung dal aside
Step 2 – Making Coconut rice flour Paste:
- in a mixie jar, add scrapped coconut, rice flour
- pour some water
- grind it into fine paste
- keep this aside
Step 3 – Preparing Drumstick Poricha Kuzhambu:
- in a kadai, add oil
- once hot, add mustard seeds and let it splutter
- add urad dal, cumin/jeera seeds, hing/asoefotida
- put in a pinch of turmeric powder
- add cooked drumsticks in the kadai
- add a tsp of sambar powder along with required salt.Sprinkle few curry leaves
- saute it well for 2-3 minutes
- add cooked mung dal and coconut paste we prepared
- combine everything together and allow it to boil for 5 minutes
- drumstick poricha kuzhambu is ready to serve
- serve it hot with rice
