Poha is a quick and easy 5 minute breakfast recipe with Flattened Rice or Aval. The recipe is so popular among North India. To make poha, simply clean the dust particles from flattened rice or aval, soak it in water for 5 minutes and drain it to remove excess water, adding onions and few veggies of choice, squeezing a lime juice as the final touch. In this recipe, I used only grated carrot. but, any veggies like potato, beans,peas,.. can be added with respect to change in cook time. I used soft Flattened rice in the recipe, so i simply used water to clean. If using thick Flattened rice, soak it for 5 minutes before cleaning.The same recipe can be followed by removing onions to serve as NO ONION NO GARLIC recipe! Sharing the recipe I followed

Ingredients to make Poha:

  • Flattened Rice – 3/4 cup (150grams)
  • Peanuts – 2tbsp
  • Grated Carrot -1/2 cup
  • Onion – 2 (Finely Chopped)
  • green chilies -2 (Finely Chopped)
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 Tsp
  • sugar – 1tsp
  • mustard seeds – 1tsp
  • cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • lemon juice – 2 tsp
  • curry leaves
  • coriander leaves
  • oil as required
  • salt as required

Method:

Pre-task:
  • Take a bowl, place a Sieve on top
  • add flattened rice in the sieve and pour water on top
  • wash it well. keep this aside

(this step helps to clean flattened Rice)

  • heat a kadai or vessel. Once hot, dry roast peanuts for 2-3 minutes
  • when peanuts are roasted, take out and set aside
  • in a vessel, add oil
  • once hot, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. let it splutters
  • put in finely chopped green chilies. (Optionally,grated ginger can be added now)
  • sprinkle curry leaves and saute it once
  • add onions, mix it and cook for 5 minutes or until turns translucent
  • dry roasted peanuts can be added along with grated carrot (if you are allergic to peanuts, this steps can be avoided)
  • add sugar, turmeric powder in the vessel
  • combine everything together and cook for 2 minutes
  • flattened rice can be added along with required salt
  • mix it gently without breaking it
  • close with the lid. cook for 3 minutes on medium flame
  • sprinkle few coriander leaves
  • turn off flame and add lemon juice in the vessel

Quick and easy Poha is ready to serve!!
