Tomato Onion Chutney is a traditional side dish for south indian breakfast items such as idli, dosa, pongal, rava idlis and many more. this chutney is so delicious that it goes well with any fritter type snack as well. in south india, breakfast items can be served with more varieties of chutneys and tiffin sambar. tomato onion chutney can be prepared in many forms. the amount of tomatoes or onions that we use in the chutney can be altered accordingly. the recipe i share below is the one i tried at home

Ingredients to make Tomato Onion Chutney:

  • Onion – 1 medium
  • Tomato – 2 medium
  • Tamarind -1 tsp (tamarind paste – 1/2 tsp)
  • garlic pods- 2
  • urad dal -1 tbsp
  • red chilies – 3 or 4
  • few coriander leaves
  • Oil as required
  • water as required
  • salt as required

To temper:

  • mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • red chili – 1
  • curry leaves
  • oil as required


to roast and grind:
  • in a pan, add oil
  • once hot, add urad dal and saute until it turns golden brown (make sure the flame is on medium to avoid burning at the bottom)
  • gently add red chilies. cook for 2-3 minutes
  • garlic pods are added in the pan. let it cook for a minute
  • transfer the mixture to a mixie jar
  • in the same pan, add oil
  • once hot, add onions and cook for 5 minutes or until it turns translucent
  • add tomatoes now along with 1/4 cup of water. let it cook until turns mushy
  • add tamarind in the pan and turn off flame
  • allow the mixture to cool off completely
  • add few coriander leaves with required salt
  • grind it into fine paste
to temper:
  • in a pan, add oil
  • once hot, add mustard seeds and allow it to splutter
  • put in curry leaves and cook for a minute or until leaves turn crispy
  • hing/asoefotida can be added (optional)
  • slowly pour this into the chutney
  • onion tomato chutney is ready!!!
