
Ashoka Halwa or Pasi Paruppu Halwa is a traditional South Indian Glossy Dessert Recipe prepared with Mung Dal. This recipe is prepared with simply green moong dal and sugar. The recipe is so easy and quickly made by pressure cooking dal, mixing cooked dal and sugar along with ghee to make a glossy and smooth texture. generally, this dessert is made during the festival season to be shared during the feast, but can also be made during other days too.
Ingredients to make Ashoka Halwa:
PREPARATION TIME: 10 MINS | COOK TIME: 20 MINS
- Mung Dal – 1/2 cup (100grams)
- whole wheat flour – 2 tbsp
- ghee -1/2 cup (100ml)
- sugar – 1 cup (200grams)
- cardamom powder – a pinch
- food color (optional)
- Few Cashewnuts
- water as required

Method:
- In a pressure cooker, add mung dal(1/2cup) along with water (1.5 cups)
- close with the lid and put on weight
- pressure cook for 4 whistles
- allow the pressure to get subsided
- in a mixie jar, grind the pressure cooked mung dal mixture to a paste (this step is optional. it just helps to avoid lump formation in halwa preparation)
- In a pan, add a tsp ghee and add cashewnuts
- roast it until turns golden brown
- take out and keep this aside
- in the same pan, add a tsp of ghee, roast the whole wheat flour for 2 minutes
- add the grounded mung dal mixture now
- mix it well and cook for 2-3 minutes
- add the sugar in the pan. Wait until sugar gets dissolved
- ghee (1/4 cup) is added in the pan
- combine it well and cook for 3 minutes
- add a tbsp of ghee (when ghee is absorbed), mix it well
- repeat (the process 3 times) adding a tbsp of ghee for every 2 minutes
- when the halwa gets separated from the pan, add food color ( a pinch of color is mixed with a tbsp of water)
- mix it well to spread evenly
- add a pinch of cardamom powder along with roasted cashewnuts
- turn off flame
Ashoka halwa is ready now!!!
