Masala Puri chaat is a famous street food in Karnataka. This chaat is a very Spicy, yet flavorful street food style snack. For long time, I kept postponing making masala puri post. The masala we prepare for masala puri chaat with green peas can be used as side dish for chapathi/puri/dosa as well. The complete video with detailed step by step instructions have been given below. You can serve with some sweet chutney if you want. I served as such. It will be spicy and delicious. Kindly note that “serve Masala Puri Chaat as soon as we prepared” Or Else The Puris Become Soggy. In that case, add some puris on top for crunchiness

Ingredients to make Masala Puri:

Preparation Time: 10 mins | Cook Time: 20 mins | Wait Time: 8 Hours

  • Peas – 1 cup (200grams) 
  • Potato – 2 (Diced)
  • Garlic – 1 tsp
  • Ginger – 1 tsp
  • Green Chillies – 3 
  • Onion – 2 (medium)
  • Tomato – 2 (medium)
  • Chilli Powder -1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Garam Masala powder – 1 tsp
  • Chat Masala -1/2 tsp
  • Cumin powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander leaves
  • Pani Puris – 8-10
  • Sev as required
  • Tamarind Dates Chutney – 2 tbsp
  • Mint Coriander Chutney – 2 tbsp
  • Salt as required
  • Water as required
  • Oil as required

Note: If using Fresh Peas, use directly. If using Frozen Peas, take out and allow it to come to room temperature before use. If using Dry Peas, Pre-soak for 8 hours before use

Method:

  • Pre-soak Dry peas in water for 8 hours before starting the procedure
  • in a pressure cooker, add soaked peas with water and potatoes
  • Close with the lid. Pressure cook for four whistles
  • Once pressure subsides, open the cooker
  • Mash the peas and Potatoes
  • keep this aside
  • in a pan/kadai, add oil
  • add ginger, garlic, green chillies and onion
  • saute it well. cook for 2-3 minutes or until onions turn translucent
  • once onions are cooked, add tomatoes
  • cook well for 3-5 minutes or until tomatoes are mushy
  • turn off stove when tomatoes are cooked well
  • allow the mixture to come to room temperature
  • transfer the content to mixie jar
  • grind it into fine paste
  • keep the onion tomato puree ready. Keep this aside
  • in a pan/kadai, add oil
  • add Onion Tomato Puree in the pan
  • pressure cooked potato Peas masala can be added now
  • mix everything together once
  • add turmeric powder, chilli powder, cumin powder, garam masala, chat masala and salt as required
  • add 2 cups of water in the pan
  • combine everything together
  • close with the lid and cook for 15 minutes

after 15 minutes,

  • masala is cooked well
  • sprinkle coriander leaves and turn off flame

Assembling the masala Puri to serve: (check video for reference)

  • In a bowl/plate, place pani puris and break it
  • add masala (we prepared)on top
  • sprinkle finely chopped onions, tomatoes
  • add a tbsp of tamarind dates chutney and mint coriander chutneys in the plate
  • on top, add chili powder,chat masala and garam masala powder
  • along with sev puri on top for flavor
  • sprinkle few coriander leaves
